We could have simply made a plastic version of the hand crafted wooden battens that are made every day by pretty much every exhibit house out there, but we thought why stop there. Let's take it to the next level. Let's see what we can do with a batten. The current technology may work well enough but let's see what features we can add. We are very pleased with the end result. We call it the EZ Batten. Below is a list of some of the features we've incorporated into the EZ Battens:
• Reduced surface contact
To minimize on surface contact with the crate contents and add a new performance benefit to our battens we added a taper to the side walls and to the base runners. Doing this eliminated the need for the felt padding. Packing and unpacking of finished materials is made easier since so little of the surface of the items touches the batten.
• Precision Manufacturing.
We've looked at verious manufacturing processes and found that the injection mold process provides the best proformance for this product. We get consistent, high quality persision parts at a very reasonable price point. The batten you use today can be replaced with a new batten in five years and it will fit exactly the same way. The dimensions of the battens will not change.
• Screw in attachment.
Our screw in design makes installation and repair work quick and easy. This added benefit also provides the potential for repurposing of entire crates and or just the battens. Crates are a big investment for a client, with some creativity you can offer them some lnexpensive solutions that can make you a more valued partner.
• Easy cleaning.
You know how dirty your crates can get. Cleaning unwanted dirt and debris out of a crate will be quick and easy; use an air hose or broom. Since there is no felt, loose debris (such as splinters, screws, and nails) has nothing to snag onto.
• Better use of your Production Personnel.
I think that the biggest benefit will be realized in how you can repurpose your shop labor. Since you can greatly reduce the amount of time spent on hand crafting wooden battens from scratch you can utilize that time where it's needed most, the custom construction and finishing of exhibit properties.
